Redwood Trunk Base with Ferns

Fibrous red bark runs straight down into a skirt of duff and sword fern at the foot of a coast redwood.

The light was coming in low and warm through the trees behind, catching the trunk's ridged bark while the forest floor stayed in shadow. A sword fern and a patch of redwood sorrel have taken hold right at the base, and the understory beyond opens into a sunlit stand of slender trunks.
